The Nutcracker by Ballet de Barcelona
Christmas is upon us and, with it, the desire to immerse oneself totally in its magical atmosphere sprouts. And the best way, like every year, is to attend the Christmas show par excellence: The Nutcracker, with its captivating music which, together with the enchanting costumes, the characters of yesteryear but always current, embraces the viewer while conducting him in the fascinating, evocative, enchanted world of childhood. And Christmas has just this power. That of bringing us back, of getting closer and, in some cases, of making peace with the child that is in us, in every phase of our existence, even the most mature.
Tchaikowsky's music is now part of our essence, like a protein brick that makes up the genetic code. And we cannot help but let it establish an assonance with the breath and lull us, transporting us towards enigmatic labyrinths of the soul.
Among the many companies in the world that, again this year, will offer the key to crossing the threshold of the magical world of The Nutcracker is the Ballet de Barcelona, a young company, of classical and contemporary dance, born in 2019 thanks to the diligent passion of its young directors, Chase Johnsey (artistic director) and Carlos Renedo (executive director), assisted by co-founder Carolina Masjuan (associate director), dancer Anna Ishii (assistant artistic director), as well as by an extraordinary team of professionals, each of them as specialized in their sector, from lighting to scenography, from production to physiotherapists and physical trainers, from digital marketing to photography, but all united by one goal: to raise the company to the highest level of quality and competitiveness.
Of fundamental importance are the teachers who, every day, work with the dancers of the corps de ballet and the apprentices: Kleber Rebello (ballet teacher), Miku Fukumitsu (dance and variations teacher), Xaro Campo (teacher of contemporary technique), the same directors Chase Johnsey (academic technique) and Carlos Renedo (contemporary dance), as well as other choreographers whose collaboration the company sometimes makes use of.
A few words should be spent for the two young directors.
American Chase Johnsey, former principal dancer in the company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and former principal artist at the English National Ballet, is the first dancer to play female roles in a traditional company.
Spaniard Carlos Renedo is an all-round artist, complete, since he dedicates himself not only to contemporary and neoclassical dance, but also to singing and acting.
Last but not least there are them, the dancers. Those who, united by a very strong passion, constitute the fuel that powers the engine, the cells of the same fabric, the beating heart, the dreamy soul of the company.
That of the Ballet de Barcelona is an artistic cast of the highest quality and excellent technique, absolutely versatile and heterogeneous, with 12 main dancers, 7 ballet artists and 30 apprentices, coming from all over the world, which has its headquarters at L 'Espona Center de la Dansa Tradicional Catalana, a cultural center created to preserve, cultivate and spread the Catalan traditional dance and culture, located in Passeig de les Torres, in Rubí, a lovely town not far from Barcelona.
To be admitted to the Ballet de Barcelona, as dancers and apprentices, it is necessary to pass an annual audition, in which the following are required: a high level of classical and contemporary technique, a strong stage presence, a great motivation but, above all, a lot, a lot of passion!
